Neill Blomkamp’s Alien Movie is Officially Moving Forward, Ridley Scott Producing

I can’t begin to describe how giddy I am at this bit of news that’s come out.  Last month, Neill Blomkamp stirred up Alien fans by posting concept art on a new Alien movie he had been tinerking with.  While the art and ideas shown off looked increidble, the sad part was that he only posted the images because he said nothing would ever come from it.  Fans weren’t the only ones impressed with the concept, however, as the images captured the attention of 20th Century Fox and they’ve signed on the District 9 director to helm a new ALien flick!

The initial announcemtn came once again from Blomkamp’s Instagram:

Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien

While that seems like a vague confirmation, The Wrap has since confirmed the information with Fox.  But there’s MORE!  Apparently, Fox is still planning on moving forward with Prometheus 2 and plans on having Ridley Scott on to produce both of those films.  So Blomkamp’s Alien movie will take place sometime AFTER that sequel, in the timeline many of us are still familiar with.  While the initial concept art and idea featured the return of Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the actress has not been brought on to the project.  Technically speaking, there’s no script for the film either, so all things are likely to change.

All we know for certain is that it’s happening, will be separate from Prometheus 2, but obviously all tied within the same universe somehow.  Honestly, I couldn’t be happier.  The Alien franchise is one of the better science fiction properties out there, and despite some serious stumbles here and there, still offers a lot of potential for great story telling and action.  I hope this one turns out as awesome as the artwork.  At the very least, it’s nice to see a proper Alien film is happening, and not just another Prometheus.

What do you guys think?  Are you excited that Blomkamp is helming an Alien movie?
