Netflix Announces Chronicles of Narnia Series & Films in the Works

Aslan, the Pevensie’s, and all of the magical creatures of Narnia have a new home.

Netflix, the streaming giant, has announced that they have struck a deal with The C.S. Lewis Company for the rights to one of the most beloved book franchises of all-time, The Chronicles of Narnia.  The terms of the deal allow Netflix to utilize every facet of the Narnia series to develop a new TV Series and even reboot the film franchise, both of which Netflix plans to pursue.  Currently, work is underway to put a plan together for both a series and several films, all of which will be produced by Netflix Productions with Mark Gordon of Entertainment One, alongside Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber as executive producers for series and as producers for the films.

“C.S. Lewis’ beloved ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix. “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”

Just last year, Sony was set to reboot the film series with, The Silver Chair.  However, that idea seems dead now, with the Netflix deal in play.  A deal that is a major coup for Netflix, especially when you consider their competitor’s recent moves on the chess board.  It’s no coincidence that several months after Amazon spent that egregious amount of money for the rights to a Lord of the Rings series, that Netflix signed a multi-year deal with their own major book series.  This feels very much like their answer to Amazon’s acquisition, and it’s a brilliant one.

The Chronicles of Narnia series has an extensive library for Netflix to pull from with “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe”, “Prince Caspian”, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, “The Silver Chair”, “The Horse and His Boy”, “The Magician’s Nephew”, and “The Last Battle”, all of which have sold over 100 million copies.  While Amazon will be producing one Aragorn series for a monumental amount of cash per season, Netflix will be working on several new series and movies to pad their extensive lineup of Netflix Originals.
