Sidney Prescott may once again be dealing with Ghostface, as actress Neve Cambell has confirmed she’s been in talks with the directors of Scream 5!
Everyone knows I’m not the biggest horror movie fan, but there’s something about the Scream franchise that’s always appealed to me. I don’t know why, but I’ve always enjoyed the films, even when I’m generally a weenie about horror franchises. As such, I’m pretty excited to hear that Neve Campbell might be back for her most iconic film role.
Not too long ago, word came out that the filmmakers behind Ready or Not (Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) were developing a new Scream movie that would be in line with the previous films and not so much the MTV series of the same name. While we haven’t heard much word on it since early March, it sounds like the filmmakers are eager to bring back at least one of the series’ primary characters: Sidney Prescott.
“We’re having conversations – I have been approached about it. The timing’s a bit challenging because of COVID. You know, we only started the conversation maybe a month and a half ago, so it’s going to take some time to figure out how it’s all going to work out…We’re negotiating, so we’ll see.”
While Neve has been vocal about not really wanting to return to the role without Wes Craven (who directed all the previous films and passed away in 2015), it sounds like the new directors are working hard to win her over: “The two directors wrote me a very touching letter about Wes Craven and how he was such an inspiration to them and how they really want to honor him, and that meant a great, great deal to me…So we’ll see. Hopefully we can all see eye to eye on the project and find a way to make it.”
Sounds pretty hopeful to me, and at least she’s very willing to come back to play the ultimately “final girl” once more. Her involvement would almost cement the idea of the new film being a continuation of the franchise instead of a reboot. It’s always possible, however, they’ll use the film to usher in new characters as well to build further sequels on down the road.
What do you hope to see out of Scream 5?
