In 1995 Mortal Kombat hit the silver screen and to be honest I loved that movie. Putting a lot of practical fighting with a just the right amount of special effects to retain the feel of the franchise it was okay to me. Look I won’t sit here a tell you it was a cinematic masterpiece but you know what it was better than Street Fighter. I will tell you the sequel was crap and I’ll leave it at that. Well New Line is looking to relaunch the franchise based off the hit game series.
Variety reports that director Simon McQuoid who is best known for commercial work for companies such as Playstation, Beats, and others will be making his movie directing debut. Also James Wan is onboard to produce and Greg Russo will be writing. Details are minimal for now but a team has been appointed and New Line looks to be fully in reboot mode.
The Mortal Kombat franchise has been successful for many years as a video game property and the movie had a good cult following. As a sequel, a cartoon, a comic book, maybe not so much. I think the series could see some success especially with movie companies willing to get a bit more R-rated. Come on imagine the over the top gory fatalities, okay maybe not too over the top. Keep it here for more details as they become available. One caveat, if Ed Boon isn’t in there yelling stuff like FINISH HIM that’s a deal breaker. Look maybe at least one time, work with me here New Line.
