A couple months ago, we got our first look at the new Power Rangers costumes that will hit the big screen next year,a nd fans seemed torn on them. The filmmakers have explained they’re going for a more alien feel to them this time, rather than simple costumes to run around it. Just ahead of SDCC, we get another new image from the film, showing the team lined-up, giving us a closer look at the costumes:
It definitely has that alien feel to it, and the way the masks seem to retract gives a distinct Iron Man vibe to the outfits. That said, I still kinda like them. They’re definitely different, but I think most will agree it’s better than the basic helmets they had before, in which they had to take them all the way off in order to see the actors.
What I like most, however, is that the filmmakers are comfortable using some bright colors in the designs. They didn’t tone things down for a grittier tone and are going whole hog with the goofier aesthetic. Sure, not everyone is going to enjoy it, and I’ve already seen a hefty amount of derision online for the suits, but I’m hoping they look really great in action. Hopefully SDCC will give us our first look at footage and set aside some fears.
Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
Power Rangers is set to hit theaters on March 24, 2017.
