I love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and as easy as it is to be cynical about this news…I can’t help but feel excited. Paramount already tried to revive the TMNT brand on the big screen with a pair of films in 2014 and 2016. While I enjoyed them for the goofy fun they were, the films weren’t exactly big hits and I personally hated the fact that martial arts was largely ignored in the movies.
Paramount has a new chairman since those films released, Jim Gianopulos, and he’s made it clear that his goal is to get the studios’ franchises back on track (this included shelving the multiple Transformers projects and seeing what Bumblebee could do). Now, the attention is turning to TMNT once again. As reported by THR, Andrew Dodge (the screenwriter behind the black list script Bad Words) has been hired to write a reboot.
There’s not much more information to go on, but it’s Ninja Turtles, we know the basics of the story. Now we’ll just have to wait and see which direction these new films decide to go. I’m hopeful they really put the emphasis back onto martial arts action, rather than huge set pieces.
