[Editor’s Update: Paramount has now sent out a more official press release announcing the dates, and giving a TINY bit of information to go along with it. First off, it confirms that Mark Walhberg will return for Transformers 5, and also reveals that the second movie announced today will be an origin story “which will tell the never before heard story of Bumblebee“.
Interesting. The original report follows.]
If you’re a fan of Transformers then today’s news will either make you really happy, or really disappointed. It really depends on how you feel about the live action movies so far. Paramount Pictures has revealed three new Transformers movies will be hitting EVERY YEAR through 2019 (at the moment).
Transformers 5 will hit theaters on June 23, 2017
Transformers 6 on June 8, 2018
Transformers 7 on June 28, 2019
That’s a lot of live-action Transformers coming your way in a short period of time. We’ve known for a while now that Paramount was keen to develop a Marvel styled shared universe around this property, and it seems this is coming as a result of that. While Michael Bay is already signed on to direct the fifth film, I’m guessin he’ll actually have to pass the torch for the others. I mean, even he can’t do 3 blockbuster movies within three years.
I’m not sure what to think here. Part of me wonders why they’d talk up doing spin-offs and such, yet announce dates for numbered sequels, but I suppose that could change and they just aren’t ready to announce what the other films will be just now. There’s a part of me excited to see what doing these all in a row will bring. The series is in dire need of a change in direction, so perhaps this will give us that. Then there’s a part of me terrified that these next few films will be just as disappointing and boring as the last.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but in the mean time, we have some dates to mark on the calendar.
