Looks like a property that has been talked about for quite some time is now going to be a reality. The manga and anime series Battle Angel Alitahas announced that director Robert Rodriguez will be helming it. Set in a post-apocalyptic future the series is based on a cyborg named Alita who was rebuilt after being found damaged and without her memories. After being rebuilt she becomes something of a bounty hunter while searching for who she was. James Cameron who says he’s a huge fan of the series has had the right for a few years and had previously said it was a back burner project for him.
Cameron had previously stated he wanted to work with Robert Rodriguez on some project and it looks like this is going to be the one.
“Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do ‘Battle Angel.’ He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.”
This seems like a perfect vehicle for the type of storytelling that Rodriguez does and I’m a huge fan of the manga. No word past this but I wonder who’s going to be cast for the lead role. What do you guys think?
