I’ve always loved the Robin Hood story, and its various movie/TV adaptations have always been guilty pleasures of mine. It seems like a new version is never far away; hell, there are still a couple more in the pipeline over the next couple years at various studios. Even so, it’s been a few years since the last Robin Hood incarnation with Ridley Scott’s more realistic/historical version.
As Such, I’ve been anxious to see more from the Taron Egerton (who I loved in the Kingsman movies) starring Robin Hood. While we’ve seen a handful of images, today brings us our first official trailer and it’s packed with some crazy bow and arrow action:
To be honest…I’m torn. There are aspects of this trailer that I’m really digging. The idea that Robin Hood is hiding in plain sight via a Batman-esque secret identity is a really neat take on the story. The action is impressive looking, and there’s plenty of it. Something, however, just feels off.
There’s a distinct King Arthur: Legend of the Sword vibe (not unusual considering the screenwriter is the same) with outfits and aesthetics that feel a bit too modern for the overall setting. Since King Arthur wasn’t very good, perhaps that is the thing giving me pause.
For a first trailer, it’s not bad, but doesn’t leave me overly excited for it either. Considering my general love of all things Robin Hood, that’s a strange place to be. Hopefully the next, full, trailer will be more hype-inducing for me. Perhaps I’m being too harsh, what do you think of the Robin Hood trailer?
Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) a war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander (Jamie Foxx) mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance.
Robin Hood hits theaters on November 21, 2018.
