If you’ve been feeling a drought in official Star Wars news lately, relief has finally come. With Star Wars Celebration Europe only three weeks away (bringing with it a new trailer for this year’s Star Wars flick), the flood gates are finally being opened on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The film is gracing the cover of this week’s Entertainment Weekly and the cover reveal has brought forth a slew of new information on the film and its characters!
This is all coming from EW, so I’ll direct you there to fully read through everything. Instead, I’m going to do some more bullet points and summarizing. If you’ve been following a lot of spoilers on Rogue One, not all of this information is relaly new. In fact, the character names pretty much confirm the information contained in the accidental book leak from the other month. Let’s talk about the characters first:
Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen)
Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna)
Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen)
Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed)
K-2SO (Alan Tudyk)
Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn)
Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen)
So yes, as rumored, Mads Mikkelsen’s character is in fact Jyn Erso’s father, which will add a more personal element to the story because Galen has information that both the Rebellion and Empire want. Sounds like a hunt to find him first. Donnie Yen’s character Chirrut is, in fact, blind but that doesn’t stop him from being a badass. We’ve learned that he’s not a Jedi, but is a follower of their teachings and believes in the good they did.
To me, this sounds incredibly similar to how Max Von Sydow’s character in The Force Awakens, Lor San Tekka, has been described. He’s a follower of the Church of the Force and been around for a long time. Could Chirrut be a member as well? This would be a fun and intersting connection for die hard fans who can’t stop analyzing things (like me).
Ben Mendelsohn’s Director Krennic is the primary villain who we saw all in white in Rogue One‘s teaser trailer, and leads the Death Troopers. He’s seeking to crush the Rebels and rise up the ranks within the Imperial court (things we’ve seen in the new canon novels as well), and is described as a smart villain. From the sounds of it, however, him and Darth Vader won’t be seeing eye to eye. Yes, Vader is officially back, and though many of us have suspected it and knew from previous leaks, it’s still great to get official confirmation on it.
There’s going to be more Rogue One: A Star Wars Story news coming today and throughout the week, so be sure to keep a close eye on us, as we’ll be recapping it all here!
