Roll Call: Birds of Prey Movie Adds Several Members to the Team

When last we spoke of DC‘s “Untitled Girl Gang Movie” (Birds of Prey), Warner Bros. had just hired the critically-acclaimed director of Dead Pigs, Cathy Yan, to helm the project.  With the respected director in place, Margot Robbie starring and producing, and a script from Christina Hodson already in hand, today’s news only serves to further the belief that Warner Bros. is motivated to getting Birds of Prey off the ground.

A new report from TheWrap reveals that Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya will join Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) as the first all-female superhero team-up on the big screen.  Additionally, sources tell TheWrap that the plot for this film is centered around a revolving group of female heroes and villains, giving way to the idea that each movie will cycle in a new crop of heroes and villains.

If you’re unfamiliar with these characters, here’s the jist of what each heroine brings…

Black Canary – Real Name: Dinah Laurel Lance, is the daughter of Larry Lance and Dinah Drake.  In certain variations of the character, Dinah Laurel takes up the mantle of Black Canary, a title her mother once owned, and fights crime using her metagene-created primal scream.

Huntress – Real Name: Helena Bertinelli, is a member of a prominent mafia family, who turns into a vigilante after her entire family dies.  She’s hell-bent on hunting down the entire mafia.

Cassandra Cain – aka Batgirl, aka Black Bat, aka Orphan was groomed to become an assassin by her parents David Cain and Lady Shiva, who also happen to be assassins.  While she became an expert martial artist, her limited social interaction caused her to become mute and illiterate.

Renee Montoya – A detective for the GCPD in the Major Crimes Unit, Montoya eventually becomes trained by the original vigilante The Question and takes up his moniker.  In the comics, she’s outed as being lesbian.

Each one of these characters brings their own unique dynamic to the team, which should create a memorable team-up.  They’ll need good chemistry too, as it’s been unearthed that the villain for Birds of Prey will be a Batman comics villain who has never been on the big screen!  Assuming it’s female, based on the comment about a revolving group of female heroes AND villains, it’s a fairly safe assumption that it’ll be a female villain.  Could it be Talia Al Ghul?  Maybe Lady Shiva for Cain to have some extra drama? Perhaps the unstable Duela Dent to rival Harley Quinn?

Whoever the villain is, Birds of Prey is shaping up to be a very interesting flick.  Hopefully, the casting for these characters will get us even more excited!
