The main source of this rumor appears to be coming from Collider, but his name has been associated with Star Wars since the official news came out last week. According to an unnamed source, Matthew Vaughn is currently in talks to helm Star Wars Episode VII, AND these talks were the primary reason he dropped out of directing X-Men: Days of Future Past.
A couple weeks ago, Vaughn surprisingly dropped out of directing the X-Men: First Class sequel, which many assumed he would be returning to direct. Reasons for the departure weren’t exactly clear, and I’m suspecting that’s why this rumor has gained so much momentum. On top of announcing the acquisition of Lucasfilm, Disney also stated a new Star Wars film would hit in 2015. With a release window set up, this more than likely means work has been going on for a new Star Wars film for quite some time, and they aren’t just throwing this together now.
So it’s entirely feasible that Vaughn would have already been in talks about the film a couple weeks ago when he dropped out of X-Men. Still, it’s best to treat this as a rumor. It’s one among many that are floating around right now, so let’s not jump to any conclusions.
The good thing is that with a 2015 release frame, work on this film is going to have to get started before too long, so there is a good chance we’ll get some official announcements on a director and what not, sooner rather than later. Until then, what do you think about Vaughn potentionally directing a Star Wars movie?
