Rumor Control: Star Wars Spin-Off Featuring Darth Maul and Obi-Wan Being Considered?

Despite how excited this concept is for me, I’m doing my best to keep my excitement at a manageable level.  First, a few weeks ago Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan in the prequels (and was arguably the best aspect of those films) made statements saying he’d love to come back to do more Star Wars and was even hoping for his own spin-off movie.  Frankly, I think this would be a phenomenal idea and I say let’s get on top of that ASAP.

Maybe his statements had the same effect on some people in a better position to do something about it.  Cosmic Book News is reporting that their source has heard that one of the ideas being kicked around for a standalone movie involves Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul!  Supposedly this would be set between Episodes 3 and 4, while Kenobi is in exile on Tatooine watching over a young Luke Skywalker.

Luke himself would play a role in the film as well, as part of some nefarious plot by Maul in order to strike back at his long time nemesis.  Thanks to the Clone Wars, Darth Maul has been officially brought back to life and his revival is part of the Star Wars cannon.  Maul’s story didn’t really end in the last season of the Clone Wars meaning he could return in some way to the big screen.  So there are things about this rumor that sound as if it’s plausible.

Kenobi and Maul

I’m not entirely sold.  Don’t get me wrong, there’s a very large part of me that is desperately hoping this turns out to be true and actually happens.  McGregor is a fantastic actor, we’d get the chance to see Obi-Wan once again, plus it’s freaking DARTH MAUL!  By and large he’s been one of my favorite characters in the Star Wars verse, and is one of the primary focuses in my massive collection.  Seeing him back on the big screen would be amazing, and could at last give closure to his story.

As I said, this is pure rumor right now, and even if this type of film is being considered, that still doesn’t mean it will happen.  Disney confirmed that standalone Star Wars movies will be coming, but at this point they’re in the early development phase with no clear direction on which way they’re going to go.  Even if true, this could very well be one of many ideas thrown out there on the table.  I honestly hope they give this one some serious thought.

What do you guys think of this rumor?  Would you like to see this Darth Maul and Kenobi settle up once and for all?
