Rumor Control: Viggo Mortensen to Play Dr. Strange in Thor 2?

The rumor about Dr. Strange actually started coming around last week.  Word was that the character of Dr. Strange (who’s anticipated to have his own movie coming up at some point; probably in Phase 3) will have not only a cameo in Thor: The Dark World, but a significant role in the film.  The rumor is that he works alongside Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster character, and while he doesn’t do anything to steal the show, he essentially will play a role as significant as Dr. Selvig’s was in the first film.

I didn’t pay the rumor much attention at the time, as it’s from an untested source, but to be honest, I think it would make some sense.  Outside of Thor, the Marvel universe of films have tried to base themselves in some sort of ‘reality’.  So having a highly magical character like Dr. Strange make his first appearance in the also magical setting of Thor would be a good idea.  Yet now there’s been more added to the rumor in that it’s possible Viggo Mortensen (who most would remember from Lord of the Rings) is possibly being looked at to take on the role.  Both rumors come from this set of independent tweets:

It doesn’t even really say that Viggo is being looked at for Strange, but many people (myself included) are making the jump to that conclusion.  He seems like he’d be a good fit for the role.  Joel Edgerton has been attached to Dr. Strange previously but he’s already said he’s too busy to make that commitment.  And that’s probably the best word for it.  If this turns out to be true, whoever plays Dr. Strange in Thor 2 will also be the actor to portray him in the solo film as well.  So they’ve got to pick an actor they can get a commitment out of.  Again, Viggo Mortensen isn’t afraid to go for the long haul in a movie franchise, so he seems like a good fit.

Guess we’ll just have to wait and see at this point, but personally, I’m hoping this rumor turns out to be true.  What do you guys think?
