Recently, Morris Chestnut left this message on Twitter; “It’s time to get familiar with the Black Panther.” And then also tweeted, “Not final #BlackPanther may be in #avengers2 first. RT @jamaal91604133: @Morris_Chestnut Can’t wait to see this movie. #BlackPanther”, from his account at @Morris_Chestnut. This could have all been a bunch of nothing and misdirection, however, both of these posts have been removed since.
Why delete the posts? Did he reveal some bit of information that he shouldn’t have? We know that Avengers director/writer Joss Whedon has been working on the script to Avengers 2. The official shooting for the film has been verified as beginning in early 2014 at Pinewood-Shepperton Studios in Buckinghamshire, England, where Thor was filmed and where the Guardians of the Galaxy will also be filmed. Of course, it seems a bit too soon to start casting characters for a film without a completed script, and which will not start filming for a year yet. However, it’s still possible that Marvel is sending out feelers to see if there is interest from any notable stars in playing the lesser-known hero. Since Whedon is already thinking ahead to Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s conceivable that they are considering a Black Panther solo film sometime, and want to use Avengers 2 as a springboard.
There have been occasional rumors of a Black Panther film for over 20 year, most notably in the early 90s, when Wesley Snipes was in negotiations to play the character, but opted to take the lead in Blade instead. What can we make of all this? As Chestnut says, it’s “not final”. We don’t know what Joss Whedon has in mind for Avengers 2. We’ll have to wait and see. But be on the lookout for more tweets.
