SDCC 2018 – New Fantastic Beasts Trailer Ups the Magical Ante

A few years ago, our reservations about a new film series, set in the J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter universe, were put to ease when Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them knocked it out of the park!  If there were any lingering doubters, there shouldn’t be after seeing the new Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald trailer shown during the Warner Bros. panel at SDCC 2018!

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald, directed by David Yates, hits theaters November 16, 2018, starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Jude Law, Johnny Depp, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, and Poppy Corby-Tuech.

BC’s Report from the Hall H Floor:

First up is Fantastic Beasts. An awesome interaction with a video of Eddie Redmayne peaking inside the box, and using his wand to turn on watches they gave us. Then he appears on stage and answers a few fan questions before bringing out the entire cast, except Depp. New trailer. Great trailer, action packed, and awesome visuals. Very Depp heavy. The alchemist that created the Sorceror’s Stone, Fleming, appears and is like 375 years old.

Ezra Miller, dressed as Toadette, says this is a geekfest of a movie if there ever was one. Jude speaks about the stakes of the film saying there’s an awful lot at stake, and a who’s side are you on story. The Wizarding world is pit against themselves as well as the jungles. The darkest this world has plunged before.

A fan asked what they would do for good with their magic in the real world, to which Zoe Kravitz replies “Impeach Trump.” and Ezra would destroy the patriarchy. One word to describe the film Jude says big, Eddie says labyrinth. Jude Law says speaking on Dumbledore and this movie, “He is a very sprightly 45, but you have to remember the Dumbledore we know and love is over 100 Years old, and we’ve got a long way to go.” Yates really gave him freedom to make it his own. He has a manipulative way of getting others like Newt to do his way.

Oh snap, Depp is here! In full costume and character.

He is in full character and cuts a monologue. Lights go back out and he is gone.
