While on Kevin Smith’s Podcast ‘Fat Man on Batman’, Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada said that the rights to Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner are finally back at Marvel Studios. This is welcome news for the comic fans who have been hoping that the character would one day appear in an MCU movie. Namor was the very first character Marvel ever created (back when they were called Timely Comics) so he has a special place in comic history, and deserves to be used in a film.
So who would play him? How about Brian Tee. (Shredder the Sub-Mariner!) Tee, who can be seen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows as the Turtles arch-nemesis Shredder, has made it known that the Sub-Mariner is a dream role for him.
During an interview for Entertainment Tonight, Tee spoke about his love of the character and his desire to portray the prince of Atlantis: “Marvel Studios just picked up the rights to Namor, who is the Sub-Mariner, and I would love to play the Sub-Mariner. I grew up as a comic geek and the Sub-Mariner is one of my childhood’s fondest superheroes. I feel like I can play him! If there is one role, right now, that I would love to play, it would be Namor.”
Of course, Marvel has made no announcement that they are planning to make a movie about the character, or even use him in another film. However, they’ve only just reacquired the rights to the Sub-Mariner so they are probably still considering what to do with their new asset.
If DC’s Aquaman does well, you can be pretty sure we’ll see a Namor movie in theaters soon after. But he may appear as a supporting character in another hero’s film. Will he be played by Brian Tee? You never know.
