It’s not hyperbole when I say that Solo: A Star Wars Story has been one of the most tumultuous Star Wars film to come out in recent memory. Since its announcement and Alden Ehrenreich‘s casting, fans have been split down the middle with one side believing that the idea of doing a Han Solo movie sans Harrison Ford is a waste of time and the other focusing on the fact that since Rogue One was a great Star Wars Story that Solo could be too. With that already in the back of fans’ heads, the movie suffered a setback in having to fire then directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller for not creating film Lucasfilm had envisioned. Hellbent on getting back on track and making the May release date, Disney hired Ron Howard and went right to work on re-shoots.
Unfortunately the trailers that released earlier this year, while good, haven’t been able to quell the dissenting voices. So, what’s a studio to do to generate positive buzz? Why submit the film to Cannes a couple of weeks before the film’s release.
Solo: A Star Wars Story has officially been submitted to the Cannes Film Festival in Official Selection and Out of Competition. Seeing how the more acclaimed films to come out of Cannes have rarely been under the Star Wars brand, it’s clear that these screenings are meant to create positive word-of-mouth for a film that has been dividing the Star Wars fandom, to say the least.
We’ll find out if this works when the Cannes Film Festival gets underway May 8-19.
Solo: A Star Wars Story releases in theaters May 25, 2018, starring Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller, Joonas Suotamo and Paul Bettany. The whole cast and Ron Howard are expected to appear at Cannes with the film.
