Sony Sets Release Dates for Uncharted, Dark Tower, Bad Boys Sequels, and More!

Going to be entirely honest here…I was NOT expecting Sony Pictures would announce release dates for 16 films on their upcoming 2016 and 2017 slate.  Yet, here we are!  This isn’t exactly unprecedented, as many major studios reveal their big list of release dates in one fell swoop, but I think the films listed are what’s most interesting.  I’ll let you look at the list first, then we’ll talk about them.

Money Monster – 4/8/16

The Shallows – 6/24/16

Ghostbusters – 7/15/16

Patient Zero – 9/2/16

The Magnificent Seven – 9/23/16

Underworld 5 – 10/21/16

Passengers – 12/21/16

Jumanji – 12/25/16

The Dark Tower – 1/13/17

Resident Evil 6 – 1/27/17

Bad Boys 3 – 2/17/17

Baby Driver – 3/17/17

Barbie – 6/2/17

Uncharted – 6/30/17

The Lamb – 12/8/17

Bad Boys 4 – 7/3/19

What’s most interesting is that a few of the films on here haven’t been officially annoucned before.  While we’ve heard rumblings about a Bad Boys 3 in the past, nothing was confirmed, and I don’t think ANYONE was expecting Bad Boys 4 to be revealed at the same time.  That’s kind of a surprise, but there must be some ideas/scripts out there that made them announce it this far out.  My only hope is that they manage to bring Smith and Lawrence back for them both.

Then we have a Jumanji reboot.  I’ve heard this mentioned once before by a source, but I kind of brushed it off.  With Robin Williams passing, I figured any potential reboot would be tossed aside in memoriam.  I was wrong, and it looks like they’re moving forward with it for Christmas time next year.  It’s an interesting choice to launch a reboot for that date, considering it’s barely a week after the release of Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One.  It’s a Star Wars movie, opening anything too close to it can be dangerous, let alone a reboot.  That also means filming has to begin sometime fairly soon for it, which makes it more surprising we haven’t heard anything concrete about it until now.

The Dark Tower has been trying to get off the ground for years now and Sony recently bought the rights in April. Being that it’s one of my favorite set of novels, I’m really excited to see it has a release date.  It’s still a ways out, but it looks more and more like it’s finally happening.  Along those lines, video game fans are likely to be happen to see Uncharted has a new release date.  While it’s had a few in years past, the fact that Sony has it on their slate now, means they think it’s going to actually happen.  I’m also eager to see Edgar Wright’s next film Baby Driver, and if you didn’t realize it, Ghostbusters was moved one week earlier.

That’s a lot of information and dates to mark on the calendar.  Hopefully we’ll hear more details about some of these projects in the near future.  Until that happens, which of these are you most looking forward to seeing?
