Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger are two of the most successful action stars in film history. They were box office kings in the 1980s. Their stock has fallen over the years, although Schwarzenegger had a good run in politics in the interim. Stallone has made a bit of a comeback recently with the Expendables and Expendables 2, which boasted cameos by Schwarzenegger. The two have been friends and business partners for over 20 years and have long wanted to do a film together. Their schedules never coincided and then Schwarzenegger left movies for a time to be the Governator. After Schwarzenegger’s brief appearances in the Expendables films, the pair had a renewed interest in co-starring in a film together. After decades of build-up, it’s finally happening.
The film was originally titled The Tomb but that has been changed to the more descriptive Escape Plan. The original September release date has been moved back until October 18.
The Plot: Stallone stars as brilliant prison architect/structural-security expert Ray Breslin, who is hired by wardens to test the security of their prison by breaking out. So far, he has never failed to escape. After analyzing every high-security prison in the world, he designs the blueprints for the ultimate escape-proof jail, which some third-party actually builds. It’s called the ‘Tomb’. While hired to test the uber-jail from the inside, Ray is betrayed by the sadistic warden (Jim Caviezel), who wants to keep him in there permanently. Ray is trapped in a prison patrolled by creepy guards in featureless black masks. Cut off from the outside world, Ray finds an unlikely ally in fellow prisoner Emil Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger) and together they must figure out a plan to break out of the ultimate prison.
This isn’t Stallone’s first prison break film (He did Lock Up in 1989) but this one has Schwarzenegger in it, and the long-awaited team-up between the two will be the film’s main selling point. Can the two screen action legends recapture that old magic and bring home a box office victory, despite both being over 65?
Directed by Swedish filmmaker Mikael Hafstrom, Escape Plan also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Vinnie Jones, Sam Neill, Amy Ryan and 50 Cent. It will be released on October 18th, 2013.
