Stallone Putting the Gloves Back on For Seventh Round as Rocky Balboa

The Fruitvale Station combo of director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan are uniting with Sylvester Stallone, who will be writing and co-starring in Creed, another installment of the Rocky series which will introduce a new character to the franchise, and hopefully create a spin-off series in order to carry the franchise forward into the future.

Jordan will be playing the Grandson of Apollo Creed (Played in the first four films by Carl Weathers), Rocky’s one-time rival and later best friend, who died at the hands of Ivan Drago in 1985’s Rocky 4. The story will follow the young, spoiled grandchild of Apollo, living the good life off his granddad’s wealth. His family does not want him to be a boxer because of Apollo’s death in the ring, but he knows he has the natural talent to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps. He needs a mentor/trainer and finds one in the form of the man who dethroned his grandfather, Rocky Balboa.

Stallone and Coogler hope that Creed will launch a new Rocky-like franchise, depicting the life and career of this new boxer character, and capture the interest of a new generation of filmgoers the way the early Rocky films did in the seventies and eighties.

What do you think about seeing another Rocky film, and the direction they’re heading?
