Well, this is an unexpected surprise! Lucasfilm, while revealing officially that filming has wrapped on the production (which we already knew), also announced Star Wars: Episode VII’s title! It’s The Force Awakens!
This is the first time the Force has ever been used in a title, and it’s implications are interesting. Considering the film takes place 30 years AFTER Return of the Jedi, you would think the Force would already have been awoken. So what are the circumstances behind it now? Not to mention the fact that Episode VII has been dropped from the title (this has been officially confirmed). So numbering is no longer going to happen in the Star Wars sequels, which is curious. I’m hoping it’ll still pop up in the opening title crawl, just because it’s such a classic part of Star Wars now, it’s hard to imagine it not being there.
The announcement of this isn’t wholly unexpected. With filming fully wrapped and an Investors meeting for Disney going down later today, it’s understandable that they’d want to reveal something…Not to mention the rumblings we’ve been hearing about the first teaser trailer finally coming. If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you’ve heard that the trailer for the film is, in fact, cut and making it’s round about the Disney offices. So perhaps this title reveal is also trying to get ahead of that!
Tell us what you think of the official title!
