Stellan Skarsgard Cast as the Villainous Baron Harkonnen in Dune

Last year, word released that Legendary Pictures was in the midst of a Dune revival, as the studio had hired renowned sci-fi director, Denis Villenueve to bring Frank Herbert‘s novel back to life, nearly 20 years after David Lynch‘s attempt.  Since that time, Villenueve has penned the script, in conjunction with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, and landed some premiere acting talent in the form of Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, and Dave Bautista as The Beast Rabban.  Now, they’ve cast the uncle of Bautista’s character and the villain of the story, Baron Harkonnen.

According to THR, Stellan Skarsgard will channel the deceitful Baron Harkonnen, whose family once ruled over the desert planet Arrakis and despises the Atreides family.

With Skarsgard and the rest of this vaunted cast in the fold, Legendary looks to be on schedule for their upcoming production schedule this Spring, that will see him in Budapest and Jordan.

The novel, Dune, initially published in the 1960s, tackles political, religious and environmental themes through a sci-fi lens, telling the complex story of a fallen noble family’s attempt to control a desert planet named Arrakis and its export, a rare spice drug, while being betrayed by a galactic emperor

There isn’t an announced release date for Dune, at this time, but with production starting soon, expect one shortly.

In a bit of fun news, it is worth noting that our own EIC, Jordan Maison, named Stellan Skarsgard as the perfect person to play Baron Harkonnen in a Dune Fan-casting back in 2016.  Check out who else they picked, here.
