The first trailer for the Mr. Rogers film, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, has arrived to give us a look at Tom Hanks taking on the iconic TV host.
After the incredible Mr. Rogers documentary, Won’t You Be My Neighbor, from last year I wasn’t convinced that we needed a big screen story about the man, regardless of having Tom Hanks star. After this morning’s new trailer, however, it can’t get here fast enough.
It’s a bit jarring at first to see Hanks singing the iconic song, but as the trailer goes on, it’s easy to see how well he’s captured the persona. Couple that with the ever present themes of empathy and kindness, and I can already tell this film is going to wreck me in the best ways.
Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about empathy, kindness, and decency from America’s most beloved neighbor.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood hits theaters on November 22, 2019.
