We’re only seven months away from the new Star Wars movie, and things are finally coming together. We’ve learned the names of a few of the new characters thanks to this month’s Vanity Fair article, but there’s one more we can add to the list: Supreme Leader Snoke. The reveal of the character comes from StarWars.com in an interview with Anne Leibovitz about the amazing photographs she took for the magazine.
So yes, this means, as we’ve speculated for a while now, that Andy Serkis is definitely playing a motion-capture CGI character in the film. Sadly, no other details about the character have been revealed (not even the name of the alien species he’ll be playing), but since “Supreme Leader” is his title, we know that he’s the leader of The First Order, the new villainous group in the film. We also know that Snoke/Serkis is the voice behind the dialog we heard in the first The Force Awakens teaser trailer, saying:
“There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The dark side and the light.”
This has to mean that Snoke has some connection to the Force. If he can feel it, and has some familiarity with both the light and dark sides of the Force he definitely has the power to wield it. Whether he’s an ancient Sith (as some have rumored), or a Jedi turned rogue at some point, remains to be seen. Either way, it sounds like this is the next “Emperor” in the trilogy and more than likely Kylo Ren’s master/teacher in the film.
All I know is that Serkis is a great actor and plays a wonderful bad guy. I can’t wait to see how Snoke comes off on the screen, and hopefully we’ll see what he looks like before too long (or before it happens in toy form on September 4th). Including today’s reveal, these are the confirmed names of the new characters so far: Supreme Leader Snoke, Maz Kanata, Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, BB-8, Captain Phasma, and Kylo Ren. It’s all coming together!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18, 2015.
