The Official Trailer for Disney’s ‘Cruella’ has Finally Arrived

After months of waiting, the official trailer for Disney’s Cruella has finally arrived, and it promises a surprisingly interesting story as to how one of Disney’s most iconic villains came to be.

As promised with yesterday’s new poster reveal, the official trailer for Cruella dropped early this morning. The 92 second trailer is narrated by Cruella herself, an interesting choice, as Cruella de Vil is hardly a reliable narrator.

You can see the official trailer below:

There’s a lot going on in this trailer. For one, based on Emma Stone’s radical change in appearance from beginning to end, it looks like this film is going to cover a significant chunk of time. For another, listening to Cruella’s narration, it sounds like she’s a character who isn’t completely there to begin with. It will be interesting to see how Cruella is tipped over into her obsession with dog fur. Also, on a personal note, I love that they’re replicating Cruella’s iconic laugh. It’s one of my favorite things about the character and I’m glad it’s being kept in this origin story. And I have to say, did anyone else spot the “de Vil place” in the trailer?

One final detail: there’s no mention of Cruella dropping on Disney+ anytime soon. I’m a little surprised given that the pandemic is nowhere close to being resolved, but there’s a lot of time between now and May 28th for Disney to change their minds on that point. Given my mixed feelings on this film existing in the first place, I find myself cautiously intrigued by the promised story, and it will be interesting to see this film play out later this year. One relief? Cruella does not appear to be going the route of Maleficent and trying to make Cruella de Vil out to be anything other than what she is: a villain.

In 1970s London, young fashion designer Estella de Vil becomes obsessed with dogs’ skins, especially Dalmatians, until she eventually becomes a ruthless and terrifying legend known as Cruella.

Cruella arrives in theaters on May 28th, 2021.
