Superhero films aren’t anything new these days and there’s a constant stream of them. This isn’t a bad thing, and frankly, I love seeing how the genre has expanded and continues to evolve. One of the few things it’s dabbled in, however, is horror films. While Fox’s New Mutants was set to tackle that balance, there’s no telling when we’ll actually be seeing it.
In the meantime, Brightburn, is on the way and seeks to tell the story about what would happen if Superman DIDN’T grow up to be a good guy. Today brings a brand new trailer that spotlights the horror elements of the film with plenty of interesting footage:
Clearly, the Superman elements are strong, and they aren’t exactly hiding the fact it’s an alternate universe take on the Man of Steel story. I’m really digging the idea, and the horror elements really work in this context. I mean, creepy kids are always terrifying, but how in the hell do you even begin to combat one with superhuman strength and laser eyes?! There’s no way to escape and I think that’s what is pulling me into this trailer the most. I’m definitely eager to see how the story plays out when it hits.
What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.
Brightburn hits theaters on May 24, 2019.
