Hailee Steinfeld’s performance in True Grit was one of my favorites of last year. She had the perfect level of spunk and wits to bring thecharacter of Maddie Ross to life. Marred with the excellent Coen Brothers script, and you have a acting force to be reckoned with. Since her performance last year, Steinfeld has been pretty quiet. After failing to land the role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, Steinfeld has been pretty reserved, only taking a lead role in (another) Romeo and Juliet adaptation. That all changed today, however, because Steinfeld has just landed the role of Petra Arkanian in one of our most anticipated films of 2013—Ender’s Game.
Just like the Harrison Ford news we reported on Wednesday, Variety was the first to break the news of Steinfeld’s casting. Steinfeld will be playing Petra Arkanian, loyal friend and trusted confidante to lead character Ender Wiggin. Petra is one of the few females at the interstellar Battle School, and makes a point of it. She once said that she was so tough that one of the Battle School therapists had her take a gene test to make sure she was a girl. Steinfeld joins a cast of Asa Butterfield as Ender Wiggin and, potentially (but not really) Harrison Ford as Hyrum Graff.
Personally, I think Steinfeld is perfect for the role. Well the character is Armenian in the book, did you really expect this Hollywood picture to maintain the main character’s numerous nationalities? For the love of god, Ender Wiggin is a freaking brit! Still, Steinfeld showed a true talent in True Grit, and she has just the level of toughness and smarts to really make Petra Arkanian shine. Good move, Gavin Hood. You are assembling a really good cast—now don’t screw it up. Millions of fans WILL kill you if you do.
Ender’s Game opens March 15, 2013.
