Entertainment Weekly is reporting that a companion television series will run alongside the movie series based off of the book Wizards and Glass. The book itself is Roland telling his companions in the present about his past. Now if you’re unfamiliar with this property Roland when we first meet him is a seasoned and very capable gunslinger and adventurer. But Roland became a gunslinger at the age of 14 years old and trust me the guy has been a badass for a very long time. Now these stories from his past also tell us how when we meet him his sole motivation is to reach the Dark Tower. Even his guns hold an ancient secret and those of you familiar know what I’m talking about and those that don’t, well this is why the television series is needed. As a little bonus check we just got this image of words spoken to a young Roland by his trainer Cort from that book.
Of course getting an actor at the level of Idris Elba into a TV series would not come with a cheap price tag but this way a younger actor or actors can be cast to play our younger version of Roland and wouldn’t be dependent on the cast from the movie. Now the one concern is I don’t think series would work on normal television. Maybe a Hulu/Netflix/Amazon thing would be in order. Either way as a fan I’m very excited to hear this and it addresses one of my greatest fears with this property coming to the screen. MRC and Sony Pictures have dedicated 10 to 13 episodes and will begin filming in 2017 with a release date of 2018 projected. The Dark Tower will be in theaters February 17th, 2017 and stars Idris Elba/Roland and Tom Taylor/Jake Chambers
