Ashley Eckstein Talks Ahsoka’s Mission, and Darth Vader in Star Wars Rebels Season 2

Ahsoka is an interesting character.  In a handful of seasons on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, she went from one of the most annoying characters, to being a fan favorite.  When the show was cancelled after the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm, fans were desperate to see how her story ended.  Rumors of her return in Star Wars Rebels (the newest animated series) began almost immediately after the show was announced, but fans had to wait until the season finale to see it come to fruition.  Ahsoka is older now, and Ashley offered up interesting insight on the character in this time period:

“It’s interesting,” Ashely said.  “In the Clone Wars, we saw Ahsoka in the padawan role, being a learner and growing up.  Now [in Rebels] we see her take on that sort of mentor role and having to lead others.”

When asked about where Ahsoka has been in the 15 years since the events of Revenge of the Sith, Ashley couldn’t offer up any clues, other than re-iterating that Ahsoka is NOT a Jedi anymore.  She stated that even she hasn’t heard that information yet, but as a fan herself, is eager to see what’s taken place in those intervening years.  Considering that she and the rest of the cast have pretty much recorded all the episodes for Season 2 already, that means we probably won’t see much backstory within those episodes.  She did give us some information on what’s driving Ahsoka in Star Wars Rebels and whether or not she’ll have any dealings with Darth Vader, her former master:

“[Ahsoka] has a lot of questions.  She’s on a journey, or quest, for answers in Season 2…I’m not lying to you here.  If Ahsoka meets with Darth Vader, I haven’t read any dialog about it.”

This is probably a good thing.  While fans might be eager to see the two face off considering their previous relationship, Ashley herself said that the results might not go in her favor.  She made mention of a meeting with Dave Filoni (the supervising director) in which she asked about whether or not the two would meet again any time soon, and Filoni basically said she may not want that to happen…That’s an interesting way to put it, but despite seeing artwork showing Vader and the older Ahsoka crossing sabers, it doesn’t appear as though we’re likely to see it happen.

Who knows what the future holds, however, as we’ve heard that Star Wars Rebels already has plans for a third season.  Perhaps Ahsoka Tano’s ultimate fate does lie along the same path as Vader’s.  In the meantime, I’m excited to see how it all plays out in the next season, and to have Ahsoka return in a bigger role.
