DVD Releases of Two G.I. Joe Shows Help Cushion Blow of Movie Delay

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Series 2, Season 2 collects all 20 episodes of this 1991 show on three discs. This was not produced by Sunbow, but DiC and it shows in the animation quality. Also to be noted is the change in voice cast that took place. It also focuses on new characters for the most part. A few original characters are left including General Hawk, Duke, Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, and Destro.

Gone is the familiar “A Real American Hero” theme song, which is replaced by one that mentions America once instead of several times. The “A Real American Hero” tagline is missing from the show’s logo as well. This was obviously done to sell the show easier to other countries.

The picture quality is probably the best Shout Factory could get using the original video source material. It still looks a lot better than any video cassette copies enthusiasts have been watching up until now. The audio is mono but has good clarity. There’s been no fake stereo conversion performed here.

G.I. Joe: Renegades – Season One, Volume 1 was originally lined up to coincide with the release of the new movie, Retaliation. It even comes with a sticker for a discount on tickets for the film. This two-disc set includes all 13 episodes of the first and, most likely, only season of the show. According to producer / writer Henry Gilroy, plans for a second season have been scrapped.

This 2010 / 2011 series focuses on the G.I. Joe team going on the run as fugitives after a mission goes wrong. The team must now prove their innocence to the world while simultaneously escaping the attempts to capture them by COBRA and another military team called the Falcons. That plot synopsis resembles what we’re seeing in the commercials for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, doesn’t it?

This collection looks and sounds good thanks to its newer release. It’s presented in anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 Dolby surround sound. It has a much cleaner picture and broader and more expansive sonics.

The series also features an impressive voice cast. Lee Majors (The Six Million Dollar Man) and Clancy Brown (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) are among the talented actors included.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Series 2, Season 2 and G.I. Joe: Renegades – Season One, Volume 1 aren’t going to make fanatics of the franchise forgive producers of Retaliation for pushing back the movie almost a year. Hopefully it will help cushion the blow. Hardcore enthusiasts might not be too excited about the 1991 series release, but maybe it combined with Renegades will comfort them for a while.
