A new trailer for the 10-episode series Star Trek: Picard premiered at NYCC today, and longtime fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation should be rightfully freaking out, as the trailer brings back some very familiar faces.
My excitement level for Star Trek: Picard is now reaching a fever pitch after seeing the NYCC trailer for the series, which will premiere on January 23, 2020. While the previous trailer established the basic premise of the series, this trailer expands on what we know, while also reintroducing some faces that fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager will be very familiar with.
I still have so many questions after watching this trailer. First of all, do my eyes deceive me or did I see a room full of Data-like androids wearing orange jumpsuits? If they’ve found a way to mass produce androids and are using them as forced labor (i.e. slavery), there’s no way Picard will stand for something like that, as the Next Generation series dedicated several episodes to proving that Data and other androids were just as humans as, well, humans. Also, what has happened to the Federation in the years since we last saw Picard? Given that our hero is violently arguing that he is defending principles the Federation should still stand for, it sounds like things have changed a great deal, and not for the better.
The part that excites me the most, of course, is the return of Will Riker and Deanna Troi, both of whom were last seen as a newly married couple in Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002. It’s great to see from this trailer that, not only are they still married, but they’ve had at least one child as well. I’m so excited to see some of the characters I grew up with. I’m really hoping we get to see some more familiar characters, but if Will and Deanna are it, I’m more than content.
I can’t wait for these questions to start getting some answers in a few months. Star Trek: Picard will launch on CBS All-Access starting on January 23, 2020.
