The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will take people back to the land of Thra, which we first experienced in Jim Henson’s stunning 1982 film, The Dark Crystal. The series, coming to Netflix, will take place several years before the events of the movie with all new heroes. Here’s the synopsis:
The world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. When three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.
Sounds like some old-school, awesome fantasy story times to me. The new series will feature both the use of traditional puppets along with more modern VFX work, and based on the images they released this morning, it’s looking pretty great:
These three are the primary Gelfling heroes Rian, Brea, and Deet who will be voiced by Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel respectively. That’s already a pretty solid line-up of talent for their main characters, but that’s not all. Netflix revealed a ridiculously stacked cast:
Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham-Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, and Andy Samberg.
I mean, holy crap! That’s a LOT of amazing talent for this series and shows that Netflix isn’t holding back on this series. Between this cast and the good looking work on the puppets so far, I’m definitely feeling the hype. While we don’t have a release date just yet, the series is expected to drop in 2019.
