Donald Glover is officially in Beast Mode. On top of being in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming movie, young Lando in the Han Solo Star Wars film, playing Simba in Jon Favreau’s live-action The Lion King, and coming up with episode’s for his hit show on FX, Atlanta, Glover is now producing an animated adult Deadpool TV series for the aforementioned network, FX. Glover will be joined by his brother Stephen, in the venture.
In a press release, sent out by FX, the network announced that they’ve ordered 10 episodes, releasing in 2018. Additionally, they released a few interesting quotes about the series from Marvel TV Chief Jeph Loeb and FX Original Programming President Nick Grad,
Loeb addressed the topic in saying,
“Deadpool, Donald and FX — the perfect fit for the Merc with the Mouth!, We’re thrilled that our relationship with FX that started with Legion continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation.”
Grad commiserated Loeb’s statement, saying,
“Donald Glover is an incredibly gifted and versatile artist who’ll bring the untitled Marvel’s Deadpool series to life with the same intense, singular vision as his breakout hit Atlanta. With the success of Legion, we’re looking forward to again partnering with Marvel Television to create a series that is bold, striking and entirely original.”
What makes this so interesting is that neither mention Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool film. One would think that Fox, especially, would piggy-back off of their success from the movies. Perhaps including Marvel in the project prohibits them from acknowledging the movie produced by 20th Century Fox.
Nevertheless, Glover’s animated adult Deadpool series will join the ranks of FXX shows, headed by Archer. It’ll no doubt utilize the same themes that made the $760 million film such a success. The series will launch in 2018. No word yet on who will voice your friendly neighborhood Deadpool.
