Game of Thrones “Eastwatch” Review: Full of Mind Blowing and Satisfying Moments

Big News for Jaime Lannister

cersei lannister eastwatch 2

I knew Jaime Lannister wasn’t dead but still, it was a relief to see him pop out of the water. And if we thought Bronn saved his skin because of any bromance, guess again. It’s all about the gold. Jaime Lannister has received a good, solid dose of reality and he knows now without a shadow of a doubt that dragons are real. I think his worst fears are beginning to come true. I think he’s beginning to think about Cersei and her relentless determination to win at all costs. I also think his meeting with Tyrion is the first rift in his and Cersei’s relationship. Are we seeing a dawning realization on his part that he may have a bigger part to play in this drama than he would like? I think so.

And that may be in the form of a father to Cersei Lannister’s baby. Yes, Jaime and Cersei Lannister are having a baby. This shocking news was one of the huge reveals of the night and it made the news that it was Olenna that killed Joffrey pale in comparison.

Cersei is in a tight spot with Daenerys’ utter triumph. But even if you despise Cersei you have to admire her unwavering belief in herself. What I fear is that no matter how ruthless Daenerys can be, Cersei can and will be more ruthless than the Mother of Dragons. Especially now because she has an unborn child to birth into the world and we all know how Cersei feels about her children. Which makes me believe that if Jaime betrays her again, Cersei will have no problem ending him.

The Three-Eyed Raven & Sam’s Departure from the Citadel

Bran has seen that the White Walkers and the Night King are on the move. Sadly, even though he is the powerful Greenseer, I still think the Night King is way more powerful than him. I just wish it was Sam receiving the raven and making the big decisions. Even though he cured Greyscale he’s not an archmaester, he’s just a dude transcribing scrolls. I just want to shake all those stuffy old men and scream, “Listen to Sam! Tell the realm that the threat is real!”

Sadly, I fear they won’t make a move until the threat is at their gates.

So I understand Sam’s frustration. Leaving the Citadel means he’s saying farewell to his lifelong dream of becoming a maester. But he has to choose duty over his own personal desires if mankind stands a chance at defeating the Night King.

A Secret Wedding In Dorne

sam and gilly at the citadel eastwatch

Daenerys might not be the rightful Queen of Westeros, what?!? Did you freak out when you heard that news? I did too. The best reveal of the night came from Gilly. She reveals to Sam that there was an annulment given to Rhaegar and a secret wedding in Dorne right after. You know what that means. Why does Sam have to be salty at this precise moment when the most important nugget of truth is being revealed? The repercussions that will arise based on this secret is a game changer. We’ve long suspected that Rhaegar and Lyanna Stark were in love and we know that Jon stark is their son. This reveal is too good to be true.

How long will this secret stay hidden in dusty tomes? Why did the news have to come at a time when Sam’s usually sharp mind is clouded by frustration? And he hasn’t even heard the news about the death of his father and brother. Will he be able to tell Jon before it becomes common knowledge? Jon needs to know before anyone else finds out. He needs to be ready.

I’m just hoping beyond all hope that Petyr Baelish and Cersei don’t find out before Jon does.

Dany Lays Down the Law

With the shocking yet epic death of Randyll and Dickon Tarly, Samwell Tarly has become the unexpected but most deserving head of House Tarly. But when he learns of his father’s and brother’s death at the hands of Daenerys what will his reaction be?

And what about Tyrion? He seems a man divided as he takes a sad look at the results of this war. I see a man who is finally broken by the fact that he is part of a family who despised him and that he may have lost Jaime. And as Daenerys lays down the law and deals out swift judgment I can see the struggle within him.

Jon Snow Father of Dragons

Watching Jon Snow tame Drogon was nothing short of amazing and I for one cheered like my favorite team just won the Superbowl. I know that the shrieks of glee from Game of Thrones fandom during this penultimate moment could be heard across the Seven Kingdoms.

And Jon didn’t just tame or gentle Daenerys’ great dragon.

Drogon accepted Jon. He recognized a Targaryen.

Drogon behaved in a way that is reserved only for the Mother of Dragons herself.  Watching Jon Snow touch Drogon was unbelievably thrilling. I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely putting that moment on infinite replay and it’s definitely one of my most favorite Game of Thrones moments ever.

And if Drogon accepts Jon, the other dragons, Viserion and Rhaegal will too. Does that mean Daenerys will? Did you see her reaction? I can’t help thinking that Daenerys and Jon Snow would be great together…as allies.

I think the looks passing between them are ones of mutual respect and admiration. And if there seems to be something more between them I think it’s this strange and deep affinity and trust they have for each other even though they are complete strangers and should be at complete odds. I think on some level that they instinctively know that they are family. It was plainly evident that the thought of Jon leaving and placing himself in mortal danger upset her. If she could have kept him by her side she would have, but she knew better.

Who knows. We may see #Jonaerys ruling Westeros after all. What do you think?

A Lannister Reunion

Ser Davos smuggles Tyrion into King’s Landing for a meeting with Jaime in the Crypts while Ser Davos finds Gendry in Flea Bottom. It’s heartbreaking to see Tyrion’s pain during the reunion with his brother. When Tyrion defends his actions in murdering their father I can’t help but wonder, will Tyrion be able to be the Hand Daenerys needs? The 1st glimpse of doubt has entered my mind.

Bastard Sons

The meeting between Jon Snow and Robert Baratheon’s bastard son Gendry felt somehow like what Ned Stark set in motion all these years ago is coming full circle. Gendry’s blunt honesty probably reminds Jon of himself and they instantly and instinctively like each other. It seems fitting that these two bastard sons of powerful men who were also friends should become friends, too. And they both want to fight the White Walkers. But will they, like their fathers end up casualties of this fight for power?

Eastwatch and a Greater Purpose

The Hound it seems has found his greater purpose at Eastwatch. Now Jon, Ser Davos, Tormund, Gendry, Ser Jorah and the Brotherhood have all come to find their common purpose and must put aside petty rivalries and squabbles to defeat a mutual and deadly enemy. Whatever their differences, these are brave men. I hope they get the proof they are looking for and return to Dragonstone. If they knew what Cersei was planning, would they think twice before putting their own lives in jeopardy?

The Big Questions

daenerys targaryen lays down the law eastwatch 3

Bend the knee or die. Bend or Break. That was the choice Daenerys gave the defeated Lannister army. For Daenerys to uphold her decree and burn Randyll and Dickon Tarly without hesitation wasn’t a glimpse of her coming insanity. She said what she’d do if those men didn’t bend the knee. I don’t think you can compare her to her father the Mad King at all. Unless you think that how she’s fighting the war is amoral?

Do we hold her to higher standards because she’s not Cersei? Because she’s one of the heroes in this story? In war even heroes are forced to do terrible things, the difference between Dany and Cersei Lannister is that Dany finds no joy or satisfaction in being ruthless, whereas Cersei definitely does. Cersei is held to no higher power than her own whereas Daenerys is expected to fight with a certain decency because she’s not a villain. Is that fair? It feels as if Daenerys has always had one hand tied behind her back. In that moment where she carries out her promise of swift judgment against the Tarlys we the audience are with Tyrion watching a queen he loves do a terrible thing. Can he justify it? Can we?

In the battle between Arya vs. Littlefinger there is no doubt that for all of Arya’s prowess and experience, she can’t hold a candle to the skilful deceptions and courtly intrigues of Petyr Baelish. He is a Duke of Deception and remember, he already delivered one Stark to his demise. He wanted Arya to find that scrap of paper from Maester Luwin. He wants Arya to think Sansa would betray Jon and secretly desire to become Queen in the North and plot with the Northern houses. He’s laying a trap and I’m just afraid that Arya won’t see the danger he poses until it’s too late.

Littlefinger’s end game is to rule the Seven Kingdoms and Sansa is the key to the North. He needs to drive a wedge between the Stark sisters if he’s to keep a firm foothold in the game of thrones. But will he care how Sansa will feel or what she will think if he is forced to remove Arya permanently if and when she disrupts his plotting? Just how much does Littlefinger want Sansa? Or is she disposable too?

And is Arya right? Does Sansa harbour secret desires to be Queen in the North?

In the End…

Tonight was a big night full of key revelations and reunions, and mind-blowing and satisfying moments. And as the season finale is only 2 weeks away with 2 episodes remaining, the endgame we’ve been waiting all these years for draws closer and closer. When will Jon tell Daenerys about this knife in the heart business? Who will survive? Will this Great War end with the living joining forces and fighting the dead? Who will bend the knee or get death by dragon? Is Daenerys’ claim to the throne illegitimate and is it Jon Snow who is the rightful king of the Seven Kingdoms? Will this revelation when it finally comes make Jon Snow her rival? Will this be what drives Daenerys mad? Perhaps this saga will end in fire and blood and the last word that every last enemy of Daenerys Targaryen will hear will be, “Dracarys.”

Check out this preview for next week’s episode of Game of Thrones, and watch it Sunday, August 20th on HBO.
