I love the Locke & Key comic series. Its some of the best visual storytelling I’ve read in a long time, and is one I continually come back to time and time again. If you haven’t had the pleasure, you should definitely pick them up and give them a read. It’s worth your time, I promise.
Anyway, being such a big fan, the last few years have been painful. The TV series, the went to pilot and even was shown at SDCC 2011, never had the chance to air. Back in 2014, Universal announced they were working on a trilogy of films to adapt the series, which supposedly a writer is still working on, though we’ve had no updates in a long time.
It’s been heartbreaking for fans, but news is coming out now that IDW is working on a brand new TV series internally with Joe Hill (the comics’ author) penning the scripts. The plan would be to develop the series on their own, get it in a good spot, and THEN shop it out to various networks. It seems like a sound strategy, and it’s clear everyone invovled is eager to see it happen. Hill said:
I love this story. The seven years I spent working on Locke & Key was the happiest creative experience of my life and there still isn’t a day when I don’t think about those characters and miss visiting with them. The six books of the series are very like six seasons of a cable TV series and so it feels only natural to bring that world to the little screen and to see if we can’t scare the pants off viewers everywhere.
With the show being developed independent from the movies at Universal, there’s no telling what’s going to happen with the films. Perhaps Univsersal will simply give up on them, or push to fast track them. Either way, I’m crossing my fingers that Locke & Key actually makes it this time to the screen in some way.
