New Star Wars Animated Series Set To Feature Poe Dameron and BB-8

Star Wars Resistance has just been ordered to series for the Disney Channel, the next series under the leadership of Dave Filoni(Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rebels). Set before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars Resistance will follow Kazuda Xiono, a Resistance pilot, who is tasked to spy on the First Order, as the organization has begun to grow and become a threat to the safety of the galaxy. The series will also bring in some familiar faces including BB-8 alongside Poe Dameron, and Captain Phasma. Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, return to voice their characters fro the live action saga. The voice cast will also include Christopher Sean (Days of Our Lives), Suzie McGrath(East Enders), Scott Lawrence (Legion), Myrna Velasco (Elena of Avalor), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley), Donald Faison(Scrubs), Bobby Moynihan (Duck Tales), Jim  Rash (Community) and Rachel Butera (Tammy’s Tiny Tea Time).

When speaking about the new project, Filoni said:

The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots. My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.

Senior vice president, Programming and general manager of Disney XD, Marc Buhaj , followed up with:

Our colleagues at Lucasfilm have created a compelling narrative for an untold moment in the Star Wars galaxy, and we are excited to partner with them again on this new original series. Star Wars Resistance will bring viewers across generations an engaging story with heart, humor and both new and familiar characters.

Though the series does not have an official release date yet, it is said to premier sometime around the Fall as production has already begun. Definitely not what we thought was coming, but exciting none the less! Keep it here on Cinelinx for more updates that are sure to come!
