Sad news this afternoon as one of Netflix’s best original shows, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has been officially cancelled.
Thanks(?) to the team over at io9, word has come that The Dark Crystal prequel series will NOT be getting a second season on Netflix. That this comes on the heels of it’s Emmy win last night for Outstanding Children’s Program only adds more salt to the wound.
To say that I’m bummed would be an understatement. The prequel series did some phenomenal things with both the story being told and it’s impressive blend of old-school puppetry and new VFX. It was a blast to watch and considering it ended on something of a cliffhanger, I was eager to see how this story in Thra was going to unfold.
Of course, it’s been right at a year now since it’s release and there’s been nary a peep about another season. As such, I was expecting this cancellation to happen, but it still stings. In many ways, I think the binge release method is a factor in this series flying under the radar. While it works for a number of shows, it also means any conversations around them are incredibly short. Rather than having articles discussing each episode, picking apart clues, and keeping attention on it week after week, it was released and forgotten about almost by the next weekend.
The Henson company offers up a little bit of hope for fans wanting to know where the next seasons would go, including this in their statement: “We can confirm that there will not be an additional season of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. We know fans are eager to learn how this chapter of The Dark Crystal saga concludes and we’ll look for ways to tell that story in the future.”
Maybe we’ll get some books, comics, or even a new film (come on!) to fill in those gaps. Did you watch The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance?
