Today, Netflix released the first trailer for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a ten episode prequel series to Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal (1982).
It’s been two years since it was announced that Netflix (with The Jim Henson Company) would be releasing a prequel to The Dark Crystal. The prequel series is set years before the events of the original film and follows three Gelflings (the same race as Jen and Kira in the original film) as they learn the truth about the evil Skeksis’ power.
Judging by the trailer, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance appears to have all the makings of a masterpiece. The series utilizes traditional puppetry, just like the original film, and will only use CGI to remove the puppeteers. Because of this, the series visually resembles the original film in every way, which makes it easier to buy into this series existing in the same world.
I admit I was doubtful about a prequel for The Dark Crystal at first, but this truly looks like a series that will tell a good story in a way that Jim Henson would have, were he still here. I’m excited to see this series come to Netflix later this summer.
The story follows three Gelflings – Rian, Brea and Deet – as they discover the secret behind the Skeksis’ power, and undertake a quest to start a rebellion and save the world.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is directed by Louis Leterrier and features the voices of Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel, along with a host of recurring voice talent, including Mark Hamill, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jason Isaacs, just to name a few.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will arrive on Netflix on August 30, 2019.
