Warriors, Come Out to Plaaaay!!!

In conjunction with Paramount TV and HULU, Joe and Anthony Russo are doing a re-imagining of Walter Hill’s 1979 cult classic ‘The Warriors’ with a 1 hour drama series which will be shown on Hulu. They plan to honor the movie while adding their own touch of grit, sex and violence to the story. Story writer for the series will be Frank Baldwin.

The film is an adaption of Sol Yurick’s  novel, of the same name. Set in 1979 NYC it tells the tale of a Coney Island  gang that must make it back to their home turf after  being framed for the murder of Cyrus, leader of the largest gang in NYC. During the trip they have to avoid rival gangs hunting them for the death of Cyrus, and the oh so wonderful NYPD.

Part of me wishes that the Russos were working with writer Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy), but with such hits as Captain America: Winter Soldier & Captain America: Civil War under their belt I’m guessing they see something in Baldwin they can work with. As long as I get to see some of the gangs used in the film such as :

The Lizzies – an all-female gang.

The Baseball Furies (my personal favorite) – A NY Yankees stylized gang.

The Punks – overalls and roller skates.

The Orphans – A gang so low on the totem pole they weren’t even invited to the Bronx meeting.

In 2005 Tony Scott was planning a remake of the movie, Unfortubately he passed away in 2012. After his passing it was put in the hands of Mark Neveldine (Crank, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance), but nothing ever materialized on that project. There’s no premiere date for the series as of now.
