In news that will rattle the movie world to its core, it’s been announced that Wonder Woman 1984 will be simultaneously released in theaters and on HBO Max on December 25, 2020.
Given how 99% of the big movies we were supposed to see in 2020 were all moved to 2021 (or later), there was rampant speculation as to whether or not Wonder Woman 1984, the sole major theatrical release that hadn’t left this calendar year, would join them. Well, it’s now been learned that rather than rescheduling (again), Wonder Woman 1984 will be released at the same time in theaters and on HBO Max on December 25, 2020.
Director Patty Jenkins released a statement on Twitter about this development:

Given that Wonder Woman 1984 was originally supposed to be released on December 13, 2019 (before being shifted to June 2020), it makes sense that they would want to stop delaying the movie forever and just release it so fans can finally enjoy it. Plus, technically we’re not being robbed of the theatrical experience since it will still be shown in theaters that can safely do so. This will also, surely, give a huge boost to HBO Max as many will likely want to check out the film this way.
