Warner Bros. and DC Comics may have just earned themselves a boat load of money, with the decision to move Wonder Woman 2 up a month. Previously, the Patty Jenkins-directed sequel was set to be released on December 13, 2019, after Warner Bros. made the announcement at SDCC 2017. However, with Disney deciding to move JJ Abrams‘ Star Wars Episode IX from May 2019 back to December 2019, it was only a matter of time before WB and DC skeddadled from that release date.
Now, Wonder Woman 2 will release on November 1, 2019. The significance of this is that now there is almost 0 competition.
We say “almost” because, while November 1 may be vacant, just a week later Annapurna‘s next James Bond film is set to debut. So, while Wonder Woman may have avoided the bigger financial disaster with the trilogy finale of Star Wars, they still face decent competition in the form of one OO7.
There’s an added layer of intrigue with 007 and Wonder Woman 2, as there is currently a giant war going on between Sony, Universal, and WB for overseas distribution rights. Moving Wonder Woman 2 to just a week before James Bond releases could mean that WB isn’t confident in their chances. If they are, it’s likely that moving release dates would hurt whatever chances they had.
Although, with Wonder Woman earning over $821 million, worldwide, WB may not be too concerned with the repercussions of missing out on OO7.
