Work on Prometheus 2 Could Delay Alien 5

Wow, this morning is filled with much more Ridley Scott than normal.  First we got a gorgeous new trailer for The Martian, and now we have possible word on his next proect, a follow-up to Prometheus.  At the start of the month we reported on word that Prometheus 2 would go into production as early as January of next year (supposedly the script has been done for a while).  It was an exciting development but has caused many fans to wonder how that would fit in with Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 movie that Fox is also actively developing…now we may know.

According to sources over on Bloody-Disgusting, Ridley Scott, who is producing both films is adamant about filming Prometheus 2 first:

“Alien 5 is still very much in the works, as Fox remains hot on the idea,” our regular tipster tells us. “Blomkamp continues to work on the script (only an outline existed previously) and refine the tale he is telling. Ridley Scott is still producing, but has insisted on Prometheus 2 being made first.”

Blomkamp will continue to slowly prep Alien 5 while Scott goes off and makes Prometheus 2 early next year.

So Alien 5 is still very much a thing Fox wants to do (and fans are keen on the idea as well), but the added development time could be a good thing.  People weren’t necessarily thrilled with Elysium or Chappie, so this extra time could give Blomkamp what he needs to get things polished and up to snuff before running into production.  Not to mention it would also prevent any confusion between the connectivity of the films.

Prometheus was somewhat of a “prequel” to the Alien films, and while Scott has said that a sequel would be radically different and veer farther from Alien territory, having both that and a straight up Alien movie release too close together might give the wrong impression.  OR, this delay will give them more time to make connections between the two.  Who knows, either way, I’m excited to hear that both are moving forward.

What do you guys think of this new scoop?
