Well now…it’s hard not to look at this news and not be remined of the MANY production issues that plagued World War Z before it’s release. The troubles have been well documented, and evident in how the final film comes together (the entire 3rd act was scrapped and re-shot). Today’s news isn’t a great start for World War Z 2, which currently has a release date of June 9, 2017.
Director Juan Antonio Bayona has stepped away from the film, citing scheduling conflicts as the reason. He’s currently still in production/post-production on A Monster Calls and doesn’t expect to be wrapped up in time to give his full attention to the zombie flick. Considering he’s been attached to the film since December 2013, it feels like Paramount should have moved much quicker to keep things running smoothly.
The studio is anxious to keep the World War Z release date, and plans to film the movie over the Summer. As such, the hunt for a new director is currently underway. Hopefully this won’t mark the beginning of another slew of production problems and the rest of WWZ2 comes together without a hitch.
What do you guys think about the World War Z sequel? Are you excited to see it happen? Which director would you want to handle it?
