The creators of the film and Wreck-it Ralph himself, John C. Reilly, made the announcement today live on Facebook, revealing that the sequel will hit theaters on March 9, 2018.
“From the moment we started working on the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ we knew there were so many possibilities with these characters,” said director Rich Moore, who has been developing it since shortly after the release of the first film. “This time, Ralph’s wrecking wreaks havoc on the Web—as only he can do. Characters we loved in the first film are back and we are ecstatic to be working with them—and the actors who voice them—once again.”
“The world of the internet is the perfect place to send Ralph and Vanellope,” said writer Phil Johnston. “The scope and scale are so vast and the possibilities for comedy are endless.”
The first film was a success in its own right, turning in the highest opening weekend for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film on the weekend of release. It was nominated for numerous awards, including an Oscar and a Golden Globe, and won the PGA Award for outstanding producer of an animated theatrical motion picture as well as 5 Annie Awards, including best animated feature. It was also named best animated feature by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, and won the Kid’s Choice Award for best animated movie. So all in all, it did pretty well for itself.
In celebration of the announcement, Disney have released an update to Disney Crossy Road, so that Ralph can wreck the game in celebration!
