Just before SDCC 2018 opened its doors, Warner Bros. began announcing information regarding Todd Phillips’ “Joker”, starring Joaquin Phoenix. With production set to begin in September to meet an October 2019 release date, we knew that casting news would like trickle out over the next couple of months, but here we are a few days later and we’ve already got a possible casting.
According to a report from THR, Atlanta and Deadpool 2 star, Zazie Beetz is in talks to trade in her luck to play opposite Phoenix in the upcoming DC film, Joker.
While details are being kept airtight, for the modestly budgeted film ($55 mil), it’s said that Beetz would play “a single mother who catches the interest of the man who will become the “clown prince of crime.” As we mentioned, previously, Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver used Alan Moore‘s “The Killing Joke” as inspiration for this gritty character study, so Beetz’s character could be similar to The Joker’s wife in the pseudo-Joker origin story.
Nevertheless, the role would be one of Beetz bigger roles, since she first gained success in Donald Glover‘s Atlanta. Since then, she’s played opposite Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin in Deadpool 2, has movie coming out with Natalie Portman (Pale Blue Dot), and starred in Steven Soderbergh‘s High Flying Bird. Playing in a dark, character study with a talent like Joaquin Phoenix could send her already soaring career to even grander heights.
Joker is set to hit theaters October 4, 2019!
