The next Witcher game is going to be the start of a new era in the franchise — both in story and development.

CD Projekt Red made the announcement today the new game will be the beginning of a “new saga” in the franchise, but left us with no other insight into what to expect for the story.

The new game will also be a jump for developers as they move from working with REDengine to Unreal Engine 5.

The move is the “beginning a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games,” according to CD Projekt Red.

“It covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant. We’ll closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences,” the company said in an announcement.

CD Projekt Red also said there are no other details — like a development time frame or release date — available.

The company noted that REDengine will continue being used in the development of the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion as it was the engine the base game was developed using.
