Our Most Anticipated Video Games of 2017

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – In what world could I not start with this one?  Anyone who knows me or has read my work knows how much of a Zelda fanboy I am.  However, you don’t even have to be a fanboy to appreciate the gravity of Breath of the Wild.  It’s the first true open-world Zelda game, Windwaker was to an extent but not to the level of Breath of the Wild.  In the short demo I played, it wasn’t just the environment that felt open to endless possibilities.  It’s also the move-set, the ability to pick up enemy weapons, cooking, etc that make it it’s own unique world.  The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is definitely my most anticipated game for 2017!  Plus, it gets even better when you can play it on the go when the Nintendo Switch comes out alongside it!

Mass Effect: Andromeda – The next chapter of the Mass Effect franchise is so close, I can’t stand it.  Set in a whole new part of the galaxy, in a completely different time, the crew of Mass Effect Andromeda embarks on a massive journey to find a new planet to call home.  The trailer shown on N7 Day wowed us even more by showing combat mechanics and the new aliens that call this area home.  EA/Bioware seems to have learned from their mistakes with Mass Effect 3 and now we’ll reap the rewards!

Ghost Recon: WildlandsUbisoft continues their venture to create a successful community-based game with Ghost Recon: Wildlands.  Previous titles like The Division and Steep haven’t panned out as well as they had previously hoped.  However, what makes me excited enough to drink the Ubisoft kool-aid again are the coordinated missions they’re inserting into Wildlands.  The task of taking down the Santa Blanca cartel isn’t an easy one.  You have to travel across the drug dealer-infested country of Bolivia and infiltrate various compounds in order to cut down each leader of the cartel.  It requires a lot of stealth, coordination, and buddies to pull it off and that’s what gets me excited for Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole – Without a doubt, the funniest game shown at E3 2016 was Ubisoft’s unlikely sequel, South Park: The Fractured But Whole!  They struck gold with The Stick of Truth so why not move on to the superhero genre?  I cannot wait to see what kind of hilarity is in store for the Coon & Friends!

Horizon: Zero Dawn – This game may be the one game everyone with a PS4 is universally excited about.  If that isn’t the case, how could you not be?  If Far Cry Primal and Tomb Raider had a futuristic technological baby, Horizon: Zero Dawn would be that baby. There’s a lot to like about that concept, especially considering that it’s completely original and totally mysterious.  Not to mention, they’ve created a character in Aloy that just looks like she’ll be a badass.  Guerilla Games has definitely done a superb job on this one and I’m more than ready to get my hands on it!

Detroit: Become Human – Having played Quantic Dreams’ two other titles, “Beyond: Two Souls” and “Heavy Rain” I really enjoy the way this company tells a story for their games. The controls may be somewhat challenging when starting out but you quickly get the hang of it. Plus being able to play an android hunting down other androids that deviate from their programming has a kind of Blade Runner feel to me.

Horizon Zero Dawn – The moment I saw this game I knew I had to have it. If the story is anywhere near what graphics and gameplay for this look like, I’ll be more than satisfied.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III – After playing every Dawn of War title out there I have no choice but to get DoW-III when it comes out.

Days Gone – Even though I really don’t do the survival horror genre anymore. There was just something about the trailer for this game that kinda grabbed me.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands – Years ago I bought a video card that came with the original Ghost Recon game. At the time I was NOT a FPS gamer. Not very long after I had purchased the Gold pack that had GR and all the expansions plus GR2 and its expansion Summit Strike. I was hooked. Then I made some friends buy it and that was what we did for about a year and a half to two years every night … play Ghost Recon. They eventually came out with GR: Advanced Warfighter and future soldier but those two releases just weren’t the same. The game I loved was not fully there. So when I saw the trailer for GR: Wildlands during E3 I totally lost it. It appears they are going back to the origins of the game. To say I eagerly await this game is a understatement.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole – Considering my disdain for the TV series, I’m still in shock over how much I loved The Stick of Truth.  It’s a fun RPG with some great mechanics and I’m eager to see how the sequel builds on all of that with a new story to play around with.

Spider-Man PS4Insomniac delighted Spider-Man fans earlier this year with the reveal of a brand new game featuring the wall-crawler coming to the PS4 (likely around the time of the new movie’s release).  Since then, details and new information have been scarce, but the impressive first trailer keeps my mind rolling with possibilities.  I’ve long loved the Spider-Man games, despite their turn for the worse in recent years.  I’m crossing my fingers Insomniac can bring the goods back to the franchise.

Destiny 2Destiny remains an anomaly to me. As one who doesn’t particularly care for shooters or MMO’s, Destiny (which combines the two) managed to hook me completely.  It’s one of the few games that’s been able to pull me back into playing time and time again in the last couple years since its release.  If Destiny 2 can deliver on the same addictive gameplay, along with better story options, I’m sold.

Sea of ThievesRare‘s upcoming Pirate simulator has snagged my interest since its initial reveal and the urge to play it has only grown with it’s great presentation at E3.  While I couldn’t be on hand to check it out, Matt had nothing but great things to say.  It’s a different kind of game than I’m used to playing, and that might be part of its appeal to me.

Nintendo Switch – Okay, technically I’m cheating here as I’m not listing a specific game, but it’s hard to look ahead to 2017 without feeling some excitement for Nintendo‘s new console.  While we won’t get more specific details on the system and upcoming games for another couple weeks, I’m all aboard on the handheld/console hybrid.  The new Mario game briefly teased in the announcement looks swanky and the pull of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is strong.

Obviously I’m incredibly excited for Horizon Zero Dawn and Mass Effect: Andromeda.  They’re probably the games I’m MOST looking forward to playing.  I didn’t list them, however, because they actually appeared on my most anticipated list from LAST YEAR.  As such, I thought it’d be fair to give other titles a chance.

Horizon: Zero Dawn – I was honestly ready to buy this game this year, but instead I don’t think I got any PS4 exclusives in the Fall at all. I’m ready for some new exclusives and Horizon seems to be the type of game that shows why. I’ve been excited for it since seeing it at E3, and the game even made my most anticipated 2016 list!

Spider-man PS4 – I’ve written so many article and talked about it so much, Sony should make an exclusive Spider-Man game with their licensing rights. What do they do? They throw it to one of the best studios out there, Insomniac, and tease the hell out of us with an amazing trailer and awesome looking suite. This game is going to be awesome!

Resident Evil 7 – Finally, a return to core survival horror for the series and not guns blazing third person shooter. The demos for the game have been absolutely mind blowing and scary as hell, and all it took was a little inspiration from Kojima to do it. (Thanks Silent Hills) I can’t wait to put my headphones on, turn out the lights, and play this game! Oh and some VR episodes, oh hell yes!

Red Dead Redemption 2 – I wasn’t the biggest fan of the “first” one, but it’s Rockstar. Their follow up expansion was brilliant, and all their games are beautiful. It will be interesting to see how they follow up the biggest game in the industry, GTAV, and head to the Wild West to do it.

The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild – I don’t have any system to play this on and don’t plan on buying a Nintendo Switch anytime soon, but this game looks absolutely glorious. It is doing so well during showcases that even rivaling console makers are making remarks totally out of the blue on how great the game is. If any game were to make me buy a Switch, this is probably it.
