Dark Souls Board Game Passes $2.3 Million

We know you already headed straight to Kickstarter to support Cinema of Attractions, I mean who hasn’t headed to this Kickstarter yet?

While you are there you might want to check out the Dark Souls boardgame. The Kickstarter was initially only asking for $70 thousand to get funded, but support has flooded in and the game now sits at over $2.3 million dollars with 17 days left. The original goal was met within 3 minutes of the project going live.

Support is so strong that the lower tiers of the pledges have sold out due to demand. The current lowest tier of $103 is completely sold out with two other tiers remaining.

Steamforged Games are developing the tabletop game with Bandai Namco. The game is set in the Dark Souls universe with specially designed statues and pieces ripped right from the game. The game can be played with 1-4 players and the official game descriptiong reads:

“Dark Souls™ – The Board Game is a strategically challenging, deeply immersive combat exploration game for 1-4 players set in the Dark Souls™ universe. Players choose from a number of core character classes and explore dangerous locations full of monsters, treasures, and deadly boss fights.

Designed specifically for the Dark Souls™ universe and introducing a number of innovative gameplay mechanics, with world-class miniatures faithful to the rich universe, this game delivers an experience that captures the very essence of the original video games.”

Multiple stretch goals have been met, the most recent one being the Dark Set. A new stretch goal was added that will unlock the Gold Hemmed Black Set, which I’m sure will be unlocked in no time.

It will be interesting to see what type of publishing this game can get and if it will end up in “regular stores” or if it will only be within specialty stores. So far it has had enourmous success and should be catching the eyes of retailers rather easily. I’ve seen actual video games struggle to get anywhere near the support this boardgame has.
