The partnership started back when Kojima was still part of Konami where he and Guillermo Del Toro teamed up to recreate Silent Hills. The game released with a playable trailer that fans fell in love with, and the two lit up headlines when they talked about the game and how different it would be for horror fans.
Then Konami ruined the fun, cancelled the game, and split the duo up.
Kojima is now returning with his own studio and his first franchise Death Stranding which featured Del Toro in the latest teaser. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Del Toro is confirming his appearance is basically just that, an appaearance within the game. He has no creative input or control beyond being a fan of Kojima’s latest game.
Speaking to IGN Del Toro stated “I’m involved as a character. Kojima-san called me and said, ‘I want you to be a character in the game,’ and I said, ‘Gladly.’ He’s discussed his ideas so I could understand the character, but other than that I’m not involved, creatively, at all.”
“This is entirely Kojima-san’s game. I think it’s gonna be a fantastic game, 100%. But this is him and his ideas. I’m just a puppet in his hands. My contribution is limited to being a cheerleader for his ideas and being scanned for long hours at a time. That’s about it.”
He further explained that facial scanning used more cameras than standard close up work, and took a whopping 7 hours to complete. While Kojima has been rather hush about the whole Konami situation, Del Toro hasn’t been shy of saying “f–k Konami” multiple times and has been rather excited to work with Kojima again.
